This 2011 edition of SAE Congress, contrary to these last 3-4 years, was quite exciting: I have seen some signs of interest for lighting in the US. It is still far from the levels we are used to in Europe or Japan. Discussion with car makers and lighting players is sometimes difficult in America because they consider lighting does not appeal to US drivers. But I have seen an interest.
In spite of a weak number of lectures, around 100 people were attending, partly standing because of a lack of chairs, showing genuine interest and asking many questions.
It is a great and positive sign. European and Japanese players have to amplify this sign.
How?
– Presenting more papers for the next edition (Deadline of call for papers is June )
– Being more active at the SAE committee
– Identifying the key players, helping them with proven arguments
– Pushing car makers to communicate more.
– Involving more US universities in their work on lighting.
For the first time in a number of years, I’m optimistic about lighting in the US market. We need involvement of key US lighting players but also the help of European and Japanese players.
Let us work together and maybe we will see more US cars equipped with Xenon and LED and more cars correctly aimed. American players are very reactive, see GM and their rebirth from Chapter 11 to benefits in less than 2 years. Let us dream about such a happy birth in lighting!
Sincerely yours
