Consumer Reports is the crowned king of consumer-orientated product testing publications in the US and Canada. In publication since 1936, its advice and recommendations have long and consistently been widely regarded as the most dependable and objective available in that region for everything from dishwashers to insurance policies and smartphones to saucepans. Car ratings are a major activity—not only whole cars, but particular safety features and parts like tires and, since 2004, headlamps.
Two weeks ago, select members of the SAE Lighting Systems Group visited the Consumer Reports vehicle testing centre in the U.S. state of Connecticut for a tour of the facility and a hands-on, eyes-on explanation of how they test headlamps.
