3. CHINA: LiDAR Growth Accelerates as Non-Automotive Markets Take Off

LiDAR installations in China’s passenger-vehicle market exceeded 1.3 million units in the first four months of 2026. Beyond automotive, robotics and other non-vehicle applications are becoming an important growth driver. The industry is therefore moving on two tracks: continued expansion in cars and faster volume growth in emerging non-automotive markets.
Top Two Lead as Challengers Focus on Niches
China’s automotive LiDAR market is now clearly structured, according to installation data for the first four months of 2026. Hesai leads with 456,986 units and a 35.0% share, followed by Huawei with 398,057 units and 30.5%. Together, the two companies account for 65.5% of installations, confirming a strong duopoly. Seyond and RoboSense rank third and fourth, with 15.8% and 12.8% respectively, while all other suppliers share the remaining 5.8%.

With nearly 40 years of R&D experience in radar and autonomous driving perception, Dr. Dickmann is a pioneer who advanced the application of AI in automotive radar and evolved radar from a simple ranging tool to a system capable of comprehensive environmental perception. He led the development and deployment of radar and LiDAR across all Mercedes-Benz vehicle models, took an active part in Bosch’s autonomous driving projects, and carried out radar and perception technology cooperation with companies including NVIDIA.
In this exclusive interview, Dr. Dickmann shared authoritative on-the-ground insights on core industry topics, including debates over LiDAR technical routes, selection criteria adopted by international OEMs, challenges facing Chinese enterprises going global, and cross-industry applications of embodied intelligence.
Notably, as a veteran expert who led multiple generations of Lidar solutions in the Time-of-Flight (ToF) era, he showed strong interest in Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) LiDAR and explicitly identified it as one of the key directions for the next evolution of LiDAR technology.
