Sustainability must be more than a slogan, buzzword, or mantra; it is an urgent need if we’re to have much of a liveable future. Questions of when push will come to shove are being kicked around, and politicians have different views around the world. We engineers, designers, and decision-makers must actively rethink how we develop cars and their parts; for the DVN community, that’s how we develop lamps.
Last week I was at the Equip Auto auto parts show in Paris, focusing on remanufacturing. Stellantis’ booth was presenting what they do for lamp remanufacturing, in collaboration with Valeo; Stellantis can reuse half of raw materials – mainly high-value components like projector units. This reduces CO2 emissions by 70 per cent versus a new lamp.
So this week’s DVNewsletter brings you news and information about different aspects of sustainability. You’ll learn about our super interesting visit at Llink, who remanufacture GM lamps…there’s a deep dive into the plastics industry’s work on sustainability…a summary of Renault’s presentation at ISAL focusing on weight reduction and Mucell technology…a student working with Volvo Cars describes barriers to sustainable exterior lighting, and there’s interesting info about the CO2 savings brought by removable front lenses.
On an ongoing basis, I will strive to dedicate a newsletter to sustainability every six months, to continue my advocate role. We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback; please always feel free to drop us a line with your comments, questions, and ideas for DVN coverage and analysis.
Take care,
