A status report from Geoff Draper – GTB President
Static Levelling of Headlamps
As foreseen in the 18 February 2014 edition of Driving Vision News, the GTB taskforce for the Coordination of Automotive Visibility and Glare Studies (CAVGS) delivered a comprehensive report of its study in a complete afternoon session of GRE on 01 April 2014. Since the decision of GRE, in April 2011, to invite GTB to lead a glare and visibility study, DVN has featured several progress reports of the activities of the GTB Working Groups in conjunction with Prof. Khanh and his team at Darmstadt University.
The presentation to GRE included contributions from the expert representing the Polish government, from OICA and from the CIE TC4-45 committee. The Polish proposal had already been submitted to GRE in 2012 and actively debated. However, at its October 2013 session, GRE invited the Polish expert and GTB to seek a common solution to the question of visibility and glare optimisation in the context of headlamp levelling under loading conditions. It was acknowledged that this would be a challenge because of the different basis and assumptions of the two proposals. The task of GTB, as always, is to submit a proposal for consideration of the contracting parties (the governments) in GRE, who will take the final decisions. GTB does not “impose” decisions upon GRE but, as the international group of lighting experts, has a responsibility to provide and defend its conclusions based upon its experience and adequate objective arguments resulting from research.
