Stanley have developed a new direct projection LED headlamp for Honda’s new Acura RLX, making use of new light control technology, new optics, and new LEDs. It gives a broader, more robust light distribution than the conventional lamp. It can ensure a wide view for the driver by launching light to needed angles. And it enhances the driver’s view of pedestrians and traffic signs.
The headlamp is about 50% thinner than conventionally-designed lamps, which eases car body design constraints while saving power and mass. Honda call it the “Jewel Eye™” headlamp.
The headlamp’s novel optics combine reflection, refraction, and total internal reflection in mono-lens units with an extreme low thickness and high optical efficiency. “Direct projection” means the optical system uses no reflector—only lenses and light sources.
Principle: Direct projection lens with combination of reflection and refraction
