GTB held its 113 th session in Copenhagen, Denmark from 21-25 May 2012 and also recalled its first session that took place 60 years earlier in Brussels from 05-10 May 1952.
The Copenhagen session, consisting of the Committee of Experts and its working groups was attended throughout the whole five-day session by 55 experts, including experts participating for the first time with the intent of being permanent members. This regular introduction of “new blood” is guaranteeing the renewal that is essential for GTB’s future as skills and technologies continually change.

GTB adopted 17 proposals for amendments to be submitted to the October session of GRE. These related mainly to clarifications necessary to overcome interpretational problems identified by the test houses and technical services associated with type approval. The preparation of these proposals is delegated to the GTB Photometry working group chaired by Dr Karl Manz of LTIK in Karlsruhe, Germany.
After the intense activity to adapt the UN Regulations to new technologies, such as AFS, ADB, LED Headlamps and to introduce the new regulation for replaceable standardised LED light sources, the working groups are currently focussed upon subjects such as the Glare and Visibility Study described in previous issues of DVN and the very difficult question of a rationalisation of the transitional provisions of Regulation 48. This latter issue, being worked upon by the Installation working group, is important because there are four series of amendments concurrently in force and this prevents the UN secretariat from issuing a single consolidated text of Regulation 48. This regulation is the foundation of the UN system relating to the installation of lighting and light signalling on motor vehicles and GRE requested the urgent cooperation of GTB and OICA to develop a solution.
