In the next paper of this newsletter, LSS chairman Lex Krzyzanowski explains how lighting has a grand range of solutions to attract the buying public.
Effectively, never we had so many new technologies, so many new functions.
After Xenon and the first LED, the adaptive lighting solutions are now available with adaptive cutoff and automatic beam selection. Moreover, LED lighting is becoming better than Xenon; I drove recently with such lights and I am really impressed by the great progress made over just these last few years.
I think we are winning the technical battles thanks to our fantastic lighting engineers, but we are not yet winning the commercial war. Ours are mainly technical successes, so far, but not yet commercial successes.
If we want to exist, if we want to help save lives, if we want drivers to think about lighting, we need to have a commercial success.
LSS, the LightSightSafety program, is a great lever to succeed. This initiative set up in 2006 has the target to create more awareness and understanding of the safety, comfort and environmental aspects of good quality car lighting by car drivers, automakers, and regulators.
The Initiative dedicates itself to communicate the advantages of good car lighting to the market in order to increase the performance, safety, comfort and environmental benefits of present and future motor vehicles.
We have to help this organisation because it is in the best interest of lighting suppliers, regulation authorities and automakers.
There is a huge market potential for adaptive lighting with Xenon and LED and we have to transform this potential to an effective market. We must be vigilant and careful not to repeat the assumptions and errors that caused such a disappointing low and slow takeup of Xenon headlamps.
