Hannover Medical School’s (MHH) Accident Research Unit has studied crashes involving cars equipped with halogen headlamps. Their analysis to be published very soon is based on dynamic reconstruction of real crashes and simulation of the situation if the cars involved had been equipped with Xenon lamps.
Based on the GIDAS database, MHH has examined typical nighttime passenger car crashes, taking the potential influence of car lighting into account. The complete accident course has been reconstructed with respect to position, time, and situation of all involved parties. Varying calculations with different visibility (i.e. different headlamps) show if the collisions could be avoided. As a result, the safety potential of different headlighting technologies is derived.
The objective of the study was to find out if crashes could be avoided by Xenon headlamps instead of Halogen headlamps in cars during accident pre crash phase.
