An assessment of vehicle safety systems by the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland has concluded that electronic stability control (ESC) offers the greatest potential to improve traffic safety of any vehicle safety system currently available or under development.
VTT’s study suggests that, if all vehicles were fitted with ESC, traffic fatalities would drop by almost 17%.
Lane keeping support systems were also judged to be effective, reducing road traffic fatalities by approximately 15%.
VTT claims that the MAPS&ADAS system, which warns the driver when he or she is exceeding the speed limit and also warns the driver about accident-prone sites, such as difficult turns and steep bends would help to cut traffic fatalities by 13%.
