Many driver assistance systems use cameras to detect road markings, other cars, pedestrians and obstacles. The pictures could on the other hand be used for post-collision analysis, too. A specific time slot – for example 30 seconds – could always be recorded, to be overwritten if nothing happens. If the airbag crash sensor (for example) detects an incident, the information remains stored in a non-volatile solid state memory.
Valeo’s newest aftermarket driving assistance system, “Guideo”, already has the capability to record up to 30 seconds of the situation in front of the windscreen. The movie can be downloaded to a personal computer via a USB cable.
