Visteon and 3M have unveiled a new showcase for “X-Wave,” the global advanced technology collaboration launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.
The two companies are using a BMW X3 SUV as the platform to demonstrate dozens of technologies they hope will lead to new business from automakers.
The X-Wave technologies range from flat auxiliary HVAC systems from Visteon located under the front passenger seats to films from 3M that can be used to create three-dimensional instrument displays without the need for special viewing glasses.
3M also has incorporated transmissive optical films that are activated only when needed to improve display screen brightness and minimize unwanted reflection.
The companies, who are targeting aftermarket applications as well, say their new technologies will be production-ready between now and the end of 2010.
