The institute for automation and communication in Magdeburg (IFAK) is working with BMW on a possible improvement for the recognition of pedestrians or cyclists under adverse conditions.
Aim of the project VESUV (video based assistance system for the improvement of safety for unprotected participants) is the clear identification of pedestrians of cyclists. Particularly, the problem of differentiating between people and other objects has been addressed. The solution developed proved to be robust and relatively inexpensive. During test drives the system showed the driver all people independent of the risks or danger. A following study will attempt to differentiate between risk free and dangerous situations.
