Hella are releasing new strip-shaped additions to their rapidly-growing range of LED daytime running lamps for aftermarket retrofitment. The new lamps, which measure 28 mm × 220 mm and contain five LED emitters in a row. In dimmed night mode,
the new lamps serve as position (parking) lights. In bright daytime mode, they fulfil the requirements of ECE R87 for DRLs. Each lamp draws only 7 Watts, two orders of magnitude less than using the dipped beams as DRLs, and the lifetime is rated at over 10000 hours. 12- and 24-volt versions are available.
According to EU regulations, new vehicles will have to be equipped with daytime running lights beginning summer 2010. In Germany, driving with headlights during day-time has been frowned upon due to the increase in petrol consumption and CO2 emission. The LED DRL raises consumption no more than 0.02 l per 100 km.
