At the end of August I happily returned to Gothenburg and met with the Lynk & Co design team to learn about their new top-of-the-line 900 model.
There are a lot of things to talk about in the exterior lighting on this car, and I had the pleasure to meet with Head of Exterior Design Olivier Denamur and the lighting design team – Alsed Briscoe, Thomas Hardman, Joel Hake, and Mikael Roslund (as main contributor to all prototypes).
First focus was on the front ISD, produced by Liaowang and presented in detail at DVN Detroit last June. It has more than 10,000 white LEDs, with 2,500 cd/m2 brightness.

For an affordable solution, the design brief was to have only white LEDs, and ‘play’ with the grey level to provide digital exterior content with different signatures.
The lamp is quite simple, with a smoked lens directly in front of the LEDs. There’s no additional grid; the grey level is just done by PWM dimming, which creates a sort of 3D effect.
Six welcome-goodbye scenarios have been defined, but 76 additional different sequences have been registered, and it is possible for users to design their own 10-second animation on a phone app.
