The 2016 VISION congress is now closed, and this week and next we'll summarise some of the presentations as a preview of the comprehensive report to be published next month. We start this week with coverage of some lectures from the first day of VISION:
Huhn (Audi) on New Lighting Functions are Coming
Dr Huhn, Audi's Lighting and Vision General Manager, opened the VISION congress with a keynote describing his vision of vehicle lighting.
In front lighting, we have many development projects maturing, such as µAFS, scanning, LCD, and DMD which we will see soon in the premium cars. In rear lighting we will see the arrival of new functions using matrix OLED.
But time is now to start working on completely new lighting functions with the arrival of EVs, AVs, and the spread of car-sharing. Examples include:
- brand lighting signatures for EVs like Toyota Prius, VW Up, and Renault Trezor;
- Display to communicate from rear lamps as from Mercedes, Mitsubishi, and Stanley;
- Lights for communication to pedestrians.
Dr Huhn suggested we start very fast working toward new regulations which have to integrate these new functions, and closed this important keynote by the message about the urgent need to automate a maximum of lighting functions. The new technologies allow it. He closed his speech suggesting the launch of international research and worldwide standards concerning new lighting functions.
