After the four introductory presentations (which are available on the DVN website ), the Panel discussion took place inviting to present the views of the organisations they represented relating to the question: “ Is it time for a new international initiative to harmonise the technical requirements of lighting and light signalling? If so where do you see the biggest opportunity, what are the constraints and how should we do it?”
The Conclusion of the debate is summarized below by Geoff Draper:
There is strong agreement that international harmonisation is extremely important to the vehicle manufacturers; it provides a platform to learn from each other and to introduce new technologies so as to enhance competitiveness. On the one hand, automotive production enterprises and auto-parts factories will be the biggest beneficiary, since the process of manufacturing and testing can be simplified with the benefit of reduced costs. As a result, these enterprises will have a good chance to internationalise their products. On the other hand, the car users will benefit since they can have the unified standards to encourage the development of the innovative products that are increasingly in demand and to assure traffic safety. Therefore, it is believed that the harmonisation of the standards is the expectation of automobile manufactories, system manufacturers, testing organisations, academic researchers and the ultimate car users.
