Driving Vision News: Tell us about yourself. What was your education and career up to now; how did you get to your current position?
Marcin Gorzkowski: After 24 years of growing up, getting educated and generally having a great time, in 1981 I have graduated from the Technical University of Warsaw - Poland with a Masters Degree in Transportation Engineering. Days after defending my thesis, I emigrated to Canada. Since 1982, as a professional engineer, I have been working for the Canadian Federal Government in Transport Canada's Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation Directorate. I started in research; continued in enforcement of motor vehicle regulations, and since 1990, I am developing motor vehicle safety standards and regulations in the areas of motor vehicle lighting & light signalling and drivers' visibility.
After experiencing the work of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) as the Canadian representative to the Working Party on Lighting and Light Signalling (GRE), I took a short leave of absence in 2001 from Transport Canada to work for the secretariat of the United Nations World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations known as WP 29.
Since 2002, I am the Chairman of the United Nations' Working Party on Lighting and Light Signalling (GRE). On the “domestic” front, I am involved in the work of SAE; specifically in the work of the Lighting Committee developing North American industry standards and recommended practices related to the motor vehicle lighting and light signalling. As an enthusiast of harmonisation and the best, safe practice for designing and manufacturing of road vehicles, I am chairing the International Cooperation sub-Committee of the SAE's Lighting Committee
