Momentive Performance Materials has developed a highly transparent liquid silicone rubber (LSR) for automotive cameras. The material called LSR 7005 has been developed to couple the camera directly to the windscreen of the vehicle. The company worked with KOSTA which developed the innovative sensor module integrating rain and light sensors apart from the camera.
Rain and light sensors are characteristic features of modern vehicles increasing comfort and vehicle safety. However, it requires high-performance optical materials to retain transparency over a longer period in temperature and humidity variations.
The material developed by Momentive Performance Materials creates a blister-free transition between the optical sensors and the windscreen and thus reduces scattered light.
The material features low hardness of 5 Shore A only which allows the sensors to be firmly fitted on the windscreen.
LSR 7005 does not adhere to the windscreen even after extended periods of time and high temperatures. Thus the camera module with sensors can be used again in the event windscreen replacement.
