Daimler are developing a new system to warn drivers who start displaying signs of fatigue. It sets up a profile of how a particular person drives and stores the data. If the driver deviates from his normal driving pattern, an alarm will sound.
The system is primarily focused on the driver’s steering technique, which Daimler say provides a good indicator of tiredness. Jorg Breuer, Daimler’s head of active safety, says, “Driver fatigue probably causes more serious accidents than drink driving.”
The system will be introduced on a limited, trial basis in early 2009. Daimler’s device is the latest in a series of such developments, and Daimler are also developing technology to ensure cars stop at red traffic lights.
