Nissan’s new Eco Pedal, unveiled in Tokyo today, analyses the rate of fuel consumption and transmission efficiency during acceleration and cruising, then calculates the optimal acceleration rate. If the driver applies accelerator pressure in excess of that required for optimal acceleration, the pedal pushes back at the driver. Nissan plan to start installing the driver-switchable the Eco Pedal in some of their cars next year, after the company’s research showed the system, in conjunction with a real-time fuel consumption display in the instrument panel, can improve fuel efficiency by 5-10 percent depending on driving conditions.
