Under standard conditions with an operating current of 350 mA, white prototype LEDs with 1 mm2 chips produced intensity of 155 lm at 5000K, and efficacy of 136 lm/W.
The LEDs can be driven at 1.4 A, and produce up to 500 lm. Osram say the key to success is a perfectly-matched system of optimised chip technology, a highly advanced and extremely efficient light converter (phosphor) and a special high-performance package.
Rüdiger Müller, CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors, says the demonstration shows successful combination of Osram know-how in different fields, and that the company will be gradually phasing the new developments into production, starting with the light converter phosphor. Osram have applied for patents on the technology behind these records.
