India’s Lumax are building a plant near Bangalore to provide lights for Toyota’s small car, due on the market between2010 and 2012. Lumax are also setting up plants this year at Singur to supply Tata Motors’ Nano, and at Pantnagar to cater for Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors. Longer-term expansion plans include new plants at Haridwar and Uttarakhand to supply Honda’s Indian operations.
Lumax Industries’ executive director Deepak Jain says a slowdown in the automotive market, inflation and volatility in commodity markets have spurred a 20% cutback in the firm’s investments. However, the three plants slated to come online this year remain part of the investment plan.
