Together with Audi the lighting and electronics supplier Hella developed the lane change assistance system for the new Audi A4. The lane change assistance system reduces the danger of failing to notice a car approaching from behind when changing lanes particularly on motorways.
The assistance system watches neighbouring lanes down to speeds as low as 30 km/h and warns the driver, when a car is approaching on lane changes.
The system uses a 24 GHz Radar sensor for the surveillance of the areas next to and behind the vehicle on either side.
The sensors have a range of up to 50 meters, operate independently of weather conditions and are hidden at the side of the vehicle.
The range allows a warning even for fast closing in speeds.
The warning is displayed optically in the rear view mirror.
