The functions are powered by seven Ostar LEDs in each headlamp, five for the low beam and two (additional) for the high beam. One LED is dimmed for the day-time running light. The position light function is realized using white advanced Power TopLEDs, whilest the side marker lights are created using yellow Power TopLEDs. The LEDs are small and offer many opportunities for different design variations.
The Ostar LED was developed specifically for Hella and the use for car headlamps. The LED has a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin compared to the 4000 Kelvin of xenon lights. The Ostar works at a temperature range of -40 to +125 degrees centigrade.
Osram recently received the German ‘future-prize’ (Deutscher Zukunftspreis) for the development of a particularly bright LED. The ‘Ostar Lighting’ features 1000 lumen, thus exceeding the performance of a 50watt halogen lamp.
