Toyota Motor Corp. is thinking about building its eighth assembly plant in China, which would bring its capacity there to 1 million vehicles, according to The Nikkei.
That production volume would make China Toyota’s third-largest production base, after Japan and the U.S.
The newspaper says Toyota is considering a joint venture plant with partner FAW in the north of China, at Changchun, where it already has a small plant that assembles the Prius hybrid sedan.
The new facility, which might produce the Corolla compact car, could open early in the next decade. Capacity isn’t yet decided, The Nikkei says.
