VISION 2010 Call for Papers Closes PDF Print E-mail

The biennial VISION congress on automotive lighting and driver assistance, organised by Driving Vision News founder and chief Hector Fratty under the auspices of the French Society of Automotive Engineers (SIA), will be held this coming October 6-7 at Versailles, France.

The congress consists of three parts:

  • 30 lectures of twenty minutes each, spanning over two days
  • An exhibition area devoted to lighting equipments and services, with a particular focus on Tier 2 products and services. Lighting suppliers have long lacked a motor show or forum where they can exhibit their products, and VISION has the ambition to become such a place.
  • Night test ride-and-drives on a 5-km private test track, with demonstrations of the latest technology and implementation of adaptive lighting, driver assistance, and LED headlamps. The test track will have three different segments: the first for night test drive, the second for low speed night drive (pedestrian and obstacle detection), and the third for special lighting and driver assistance systems.

This year, the Steering Committee received 60 abstracts, an increase of more than 50% over 2008. This huge number of abstracts gives a great responsibility to the Committee to select the 30 best lectures according to four criteria: innovation level, industrial potentiality, relevance of scientific elements, and importance of the subject for safety improvement.
The lighting abstracts show the priority of our industry to develop and improve intelligent lighting systems, Xenon 35- and 25-watt systems, and LED technology (including making automotive lighting more affordable). The driver assistance abstracts emphasise the development of DAS mainly in relationship with safety—visibility and pedestrian detection. Clearly, the link between lighting and driver assistance is becoming stronger as these two aspects of vehicle safety are increasingly combined into comprehensive driver perception aid and enhancement systems.

Style and Performance have always been two major drivers in the evolution of headlamp technology
We can say that we are entering into a new era in Lighting Systems with two technology breakthroughs: first with the introduction of Adaptive Driving Beam and second with the multiplication of LED Front Lighting design.

After Xenon in the early 90’s and AFS in the first decade of the 2000s, the introduction of Adaptive Driving Beam this year will clearly be a major step towards a full visibility “day time like” system allowing to drive all the time like in High Beam. We can affirm that performance will be at the highest level ever reached.
The first LED headlamps introduced on the Lexus LS 600, Audi R8 and Cadillac Escalade have been designed with a very conventional style to demonstrate the feasibility of the technology without fully exploiting its potential.

We are now entering a second step with LED Front Lighting, where the advantages are surfacing. Important Style evolution, like on the new Audi A8 with dotted aspect, or lower electrical consumption on Electrical or Hybrid cars, like on the Toyota Prius and some others which will appear this year.

But the best remains to come, with designs which will cumulate all the known benefits of LED Front Lighting:
Styling freedom without the constraints of designing a conventional Halogen or Xenon system; scalability of the design; differentiating versions without compromising the overall line of the vehicle; full flexibility in terms of performance and power consumption; adapting the lighting to all events happening to the car on the road ; lighter and less complex products with the LED’s increased efficiency allowing passive thermal dissipation without bulky heat sink.

The next 3-4 years will be another exciting challenge for the entire lighting community for the full benefit of the end users in term of safety and innovative designs.
